THE DIRTY MECH FLUID RADIUM COCKTAIL

This is just a chocolate soda with booze, but I thought I’d name it in honor of a cocktail Rattrap enjoys in a seedy bar on Cybertron.

I kind of just made this up, but don’t think I was too clever; I just added booze to the recipe for a chocolate soda. Do you guys know what that is? Also known in the NYC area as an egg cream. It’s chocolate sauce and milk filled with club soda. It contains neither eggs nor cream. The etymology of why it’s called an “egg cream” is nebulous, but MAYBE it comes from the foamy, white head created by the syrup and club soda, similar to beaten egg whites. Another potential source for the name is a Yiddish phrase for “pure sweetness,” (echt keem). Frankly, I don’t know if I buy either, but the Yiddish one makes the most sense, and the theories become more ludicrous from there. Who knows. Anyway, chocolate soda was popular at old soda counter joints in the early and mid-20th Century. Like when every soda was made to order by adding club soda to syrup in the glass. I have some asides during the recipe so I hope you all will bear with me.

For this cocktail you will need:

  • 3 TBSP chocolate syrup

  • 1 TBSP heavy cream or milk

  • 2 oz. (60 ml) vodka

    • I know I’ve been harsh on vodka in cocktails, because it’s literally “flavorless” ethanol, but I think that’s the only choice here, in the same way that I would never make a Bloody Mary with anything but vodka, because if you want to not taste the liquor, or want the other flavors to shine, vodka is thy name.

  • ~ 1 cup chilled club soda (soda water, seltzer)

  • Vanilla ice cream

Take a 16 oz. (1 pint) glass and add chocolate syrup and cream.

Pour vodka into a shaker and shake with ice.

Pour into the glass with the syrup and cream.

Stir together, trying to dilute the syrup as much as possible.

Fill the glass ¾ with club soda and stir gently to combine. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and garnish with whipped cream and a cherry. I chose the chocolate covered cherries I made for my family’s Christmas party in January that I’ve had frozen!!! Shout out to Caleb for suggesting the idea. (see the Discord for more on that).

Maraschino cherries would obviously be the go-to. Some grated nutmeg would also go off with this, I think. I’m not gonna go get it from upstairs, but almost everything is better with nutmeg. See Townsend’s 18th Century Cooking channel on YouTube.
