THE PANSY COCKTAIL
You probably know that “pansy” was originally a derogatory name for effeminate gay men, but it was reclaimed by the gay community and entertainment in particular in the late 1920s and 30s. And it’s topical, since our episode 268 comes out on the eve of Gay Pride Month. Greg on How to Drink talks all about the history of the pansy and pre-code cinema, so if you’d like to know more go check it out. SO! All that to say, for this cocktail you will need:
2 oz. (60 ml) London dry gin
1 dash of Angostura bitters
1 tsp of grenadine
Combine into a mixing glass with cracked ice and stir
Strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with a lemon twist
There are a lot of variations on this cocktail, particularly modern ones. The recipe I used is from the 1932 book Wet Drinks For Dry People by William C. Feery. It’s out of print, but there are PDFs available online. I am now realizing the cocktails I chose for episode 267 and 268 are kind of similar, but sometimes that’s okay.
