THE 100 YEAR OLD CIGAR
We have ANOTHER BUAD cocktail for this episode, this time from our patron and friend Josh, who writes:
“Hey gents! As part of my self care health routine, I always do a dry-out at the beginning of the year. I don't drink until Easter. Then I spend the rest of the year drinking at a Humphrey Bogartian rate. As such, I pick my first cocktail of the year with great care and my 2025 selection is The 100 Year Old Cigar!”
So I’m gonna go ahead and say, these measurements, in all versions of this cocktail, are so annoying. Because American measures are based on a full pour as 2 oz. and then quarter ounces down. That comment is in no way a slight on Josh, because this is literally the recipe Milliliters are definitely the way to go in this cocktail.
1 2⁄3 (50 ml) oz Caribbean blended rum aged 6-10 years
1⁄2 oz (30 ml) Bénédictine D. O. M. liqueur
1⁄2 oz Cynar (or other carciofo amaro)
1⁄6 oz (5 ml) Islay Scotch (Laphroaig is my usual)
And that’s what we’re using today, I know you’re excited, Caleb
1 dash Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Absinthe (a rinse or a spray)
Josh says, “Rinse the chilled glass with absinthe (swirl to coat and discard excess or use a spray to coat). Stir other ingredients with ice. Strain into absinthe-rinsed glass.
Josh goes on to say,
“I love this one but it's a delicate balance. It's easy to overdo the Benedictine and it's also important to use a bitters you really like as it plays a big role. I also like to plop in a cocktail cherry for a little bright sweetness but that's just me! Enjoy!”
