THE LAST WORD

This is one of my favorite cocktails and I can’t believe I haven’t put it on the show until now. This is a Prohibition-era cocktail originating around 1915. It fell out of favor pretty quickly but came screaming back into popularity in the early 2000s with the resurgence of older, simpler cocktails. It is equal parts of four ingredients:

·         ¾ oz. (22 ml) gin

·         ¾ oz. Green Chartreuse

·         ¾ oz. Maraschino liqueur

·         ¾ oz. lime juice

o   Combine all ingredients in a shaker and shake with ice

o   Strain into a chilled coupe glass

The best part about this drink is that it can be a Mr. Potato Head cocktail. Meaning the ingredients can be swapped out almost at will, if you adhere to the profile of the components. You can combine a strong spirit (gin) with a herbaceous one (chartreuse) a sweet liquor (maraschino) and a sour mixer (lime) in almost limitless ways. You can use Tequila, angostura, amaretto, and lime, for example. Or whiskey, Drambuie, triple sec, and lemon juice. It’s radical, y’all. How to Drink on YouTube has an excellent episode about this very subject.

It was pretty great they got Neil Breen to play Dr. Mark Morgan.
