Our cocktail for this episode is in honor of our friend and new patron Chandler, because he happened to mention even though he doesn’t drink much anymore (hey, could we have more in common…that’s a Chandler, Friends joke) but that he enjoys a Caipirinha (kai-pee-REE-nyuh). It’s the national cocktail of Brazil, and I did research how to say these words, but forgive my American tongue.
The recipe I’m using today comes from a book our buddy Ben got for me for Xmas, called Death & Co, about the famous NYC bar of the same name. It’s not only a story about the bar, but also talks about bar equipment and techniques, and has over 500 recipes. It’s a great book. So in honor of today’s episode I’m calling this the:
COSMO CULT CAIPIRINHA
· 6 lime wedges
· ¾ oz. (22.5 ml) simple syrup
· 1 white sugar cube
· 2 oz. (60 ml) cachaça (kah-SHAH-suh)
o It’s a cousin to rum made with fermented sugarcane juice as opposed to molasses
· In a shaker, muddle the lime with the simple syrup and sugar cube.
· Add the cachaça and shake with ice, then open pour (dump contents) into a double rocks glass
o No garnish
This kind of tastes like a sideways margarita. Cachaça tastes like a mixture of rum and tequila to me.
